AUTONOMOUS
SYSTEM
According to RFC, an autonomous
system (AS) is a collection of IP networks and routers, under the
control of one or more entities, that presents a common routing
policy to the Internet. A unique AS number (or ASN) is allocated
to each AS for use in BGP routing. With BGP, AS numbers are important
because the ASN uniquely identifies each network on the internet.
It is beneficial because Dynamic routing eliminates the need to
reset routes manually. When network failures occur, routes are automatically
re-routed.
So in essence an autonomous system
(AS) is a set of networks and gateways that is administered by a
single entity. Companies and organizations that wish to connect
to the Internet and form an AS must obtain a unique AS number from
the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).
